Chapter Thirty-six

It had taken me five minutes to change and grab my phone and purse. Kyle had his car outside Myrtle’s door and was ready when I stepped outside.

“Here’s Emmie Jo’s number,” Kyle said, handing me her card. “Let’s call her on the way.”

I dialed as Kyle pulled down the driveway and onto the country road.

“Hi, Emmie Jo, it’s Louella Jo. I have a question for you.”

“Hey, Louella Jo, what do you need?” Emmie Jo replied.

“I have a friend who might be in trouble. Sounds like she was in Biloxi and ran into the same creep you did, the one who was going to New Orleans,” I explained. “Do you remember anything about your conversation with him that might help us figure out where he might take her?”

“Oh, my goodness, that poor girl,” she exclaimed. “Okay, let me think.” I glanced out the window while I waited. We drove past a large pasture, a quaint farmhouse, and a milking barn with glowing lights, and I knew the farmer was still at work even at this late hour.

Then I heard Emmie Jo’s voice again. “Okay. He said he had a boat. He said we would cruise along the Gulf Coast to New Orleans. Does that help?”

“Yes!” I replied. “That helps a lot. Anything else?”

“Well, he didn’t actually come into the theater,” she said. “He was just around back with another guy when we went out during intermission to get some air. His friend told him they needed to get back to the high school.”

“The high school?” I wondered aloud. “What kind of high school would be open at night?”

“And what kind of high school would these two losers be looking for?” Emmie Jo added.

“Yeah, good point,” I replied. “Well, we’ll keep searching. Thank you so much for your help.”

“If I think of anything else, I’ll call you back,” Emmie Jo promised.

“Thank you so much,” I said. “You’ve been really helpful.”

I disconnected the call with Emmie Jo as Kyle turned onto a larger county road and increased his speed. Although the road was still two lanes and there were no highway lights, the paving was made for more traffic, and Kyle’s car moved along smoothly.

I looked up and down the road; it was deserted except for us. A feeling of disquiet came over me. We were literally all alone in the middle of nowhere.

“So, what’s next?” I asked.

Kyle took his eyes off the road for a moment and met mine. “We call Van and Bud and let them know what’s going on,” he replied firmly. “That’s what’s next.”

“Oh, of course,” I replied. “But what are we going to tell them? We don’t know where we’re going?”

“We’re going to Biloxi,” Kyle said. “At least that will send them in the same direction.”

I put Van and Bud on a conference call so I didn’t have to repeat any information. “Hi, Bud and Van. Can you hear me?” I asked.

“Yes,” Van replied. “But it can’t be you because you were supposed to go to bed early tonight.
